The New York State Thruway Authority announced Thursday the start of a $9.3 million project to preserve four bridges on I-87 in Greene County.

The Thruway bridges include spans over Kaaterskill Creek,at milepost 111.13, northbound and southbound, and over the Catskill Creek, at milepost 113.22, northbound and southbound. The bridges are located in between exit 21, the Catskill-Cairo exit and exit 20, the Saugerties- Woodstock exit.

The bridges, built in 1955, are part of a capital project to improve infrastructure, according to the Thruway Authority.

“The project to preserve the Kaaterskill Creek and Catskill Creek bridges is one of several critical infrastructure improvement projects scheduled in our Capital Program this year,” Frank G. Hoare, Thruway Authority executive director said. “The concrete repairs and surrounding work will enhance the safety of the bridges and help maintain their longevity for years to come.”

The Thruway shifted traffic Thursday to the northbound side over both bridges for work on the southbound side.

As part of the project, concrete repairs will be made to the deck of the bridges, which will then be covered with a waterproof coating and an asphalt surface. Repairs will also be made to the existing bridge railing systems and bridge drainage.

D.A. Collins Construction Co., Inc. of Wilton, is the project contractor following a competitive bidding process. Work on the northbound bridges is expected to take place in 2025. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025, but is dependent on weather.
