KISKATOM — A family of four is homeless after flames tore through their mobile home Monday morning in Kiskatom.
Volunteers from the Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross provided immediate emergency aid to the family after the fire Route 32 in Catskill.
Two adults and their two daughters are being assisted by the Red Cross, Kiskatom Fire Chief Pete Kusminsky said.
Two of the family’s pets are believed to have perished in the blaze, Kusminsky said. Two cats were unaccounted for after the fire.
A good samaritan was able to get a dog and a cat out of the home, Kusminsky said.
There was no one at home when the fire broke out, Kusminsky said.
At about 11:02 a.m., Greene County 911 sent Kiskatom Fire Company to the Brookside Campgrounds at 4952 Route 32, after receiving reports that the home was on fire.
When the first firefighters arrived on the scene, they reported that the fire had spread throughout the home and immediately requested mutual-aid assistance from Palenville Fire Department. Catskill Fire Company was placed on stand-by.
Fire officials reported that the fire was under control after about 20 minutes. They then went to work making sure it was completely extinguished.
The home is being called a total loss, Kusminsky said.
The town code enforcement officer was requested to the scene.
Central Hudson Gas and Electric disconnected power to the residence.
There were no reported injuries, Kusminsky said.
The Greene County Cause and Origin team responded to investigate the cause. They determined the fire began in a stove, Kusminsky said.
Assisting at the scene were Catskill Ambulance and state police.
Friends and neighbors have started an online fundraiser for the family.
