GREENVILLE — A fast-moving fire tore through a home in Greenville on Sunday morning, Greenville Fire Chief Kip Drollette said.

The vacant home was a total loss, Drollette said.

At about 6:51 a.m., Greene County 911 sent Greenville Fire Company to 77 Johnny Cake Lane, after a caller reported there was a house burning down at that address.

When the first firefighters arrived at the home, flames were shooting through the roof of the structure, Drollette said.

“It had been burning quite a while before we arrived,” Drollette said.

Fire officials immediately requested mutual-aid assistance from neighboring fire companies. Four companies from Greene and Albany counties responded to the scene, and another was placed on stand-by.

A pond that was located on the property was used as a water source.

The fire was reported to be knocked down after about an hour.

The home was empty when the fire broke out. The property is owned by Baumann’s Brookside Summer Resort and was closed up for the season, Drollette said.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters.

The Greene County Fire Investigation Team was requested to the scene. A preliminary investigation indicated the cause was labeled as undetermined, but is believed to have been electrical in nature, Drollette said.

Johnny Cake Lane was closed to traffic in the area of the fire.

Central Hudson Gas and Electric was requested to the scene to disconnect power to the home.

Fire companies who assisted Greenville were: Freehold, Medway-Grapeville, Oak Hill-Durham, and Westerlo. Earlton was placed on stand-by.

Also assisting at the scene were: Greenville Ambulance, state police, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and the Greene County Fire Coordinator’s Office.

All firefighters were back in service just after noon.
