Former nursing home razed for CMH parking

Jammel Cutler/Columbia-Greene MediaThe former Eden Park Nursing Home on Prospect Avenue across from Columbia Memorial Health is being demolished to add 40 new spaces for staff parking at the hospital.

HUDSON β€” A building in Hudson that has seen many iteration over the years is being torn down to make more room for parking at Columbia Memorial Health.

The new parking lot will be situated directly across the street. The construction of the parking lot is estimated to be completed sometime in the spring of 2023. The new lot will ease parking problems in the congested area.

While taking her elderly aunt to an appointment, Hudson resident Alexzander Williams, who was bringing his aunt to an appointment at the hospital, said he is relieved to hear about the addition.

β€œMy aunt has respiratory issues, so the long walk from the parking space is something my aunt really struggled with, so maybe now the hike from the car to the entrance won’t be so much of a problem,” Williams said.

Rowan Gill of Hudson expressed similar sentiments.

β€œThere’s rarely on-the-street parking available around here because of patients and staff,” Gill said. β€œThe new lot should free up a ton of space and ease up on the hospital traffic.”

Hospital spokesman William Van Slyke said the new lot is another stage of better patient care for Columbia Memorial Health.

β€œIt’s part of a series of improvements that we’ve been making to the Hudson campus over the last several years,” Van Slyke said. β€œOur goal is to modernize the space for our staff, but also create more parking opportunities and taking pressure off our patient parking area in the community.”

Van Slyke confirmed the new parking lot will be for Columbia Memorial staff and not for the general public, but the project will free up 40 additional parking spaces surrounding the hospital building, he added.

The cost of the building demolition and parking lot was not immediately disclosed.

Columbia Memorial Health parking areas are often filled to capacity. There is a parking garage below the medical office building and surface parking lots around the campus. In years past, Columbia Memorial Health has leased parking from neighboring properties that have lots.

β€œIt’s really difficult, but we feel right now, with the addition of these spots, that we can provide adequate parking for our staff and patients,” Van Slyke said.

The building under demolition has a long history. It was once home to the former Eden Park Nursing Home and later offices for various companies and services.

The project is being handled by Consigli Construction Company, which has locations in New York, New England and Washington, D.C.
