HUDSON — The nonprofit Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood is hosting a community cleanup day on Thursday, May 26 from 12 to 5 p.m.
The cleanup will begin at the intersection of Front St. and Warren St. in front of Promenade Hill Park, and groups of volunteers will be dispersed throughout the city to pick up litter.
“The event is important for a few reasons,” said Executive Director of Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood Joan Hunt. “To be part of a larger community effort, to remove garbage and make our community healthier and more safe, to demonstrate the importance of service learning to our youth.”
Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood aims to create a chain of support for children and families in the community from cradle, through college and to their career. They provide free after school programs and support to those involved in the criminal justice system. Free T-shirts and light snacks will be provided to all volunteers who show up on Thursday. Folks of all ages are welcome to volunteer, and supplies like gloves and trash bags will be provided.
“This is one of the events I look forward to every year,” said Mayor Kamal Johnson. “There is nothing better than getting together as a community to make where we live a cleaner place for us all.”
Litter has been a hot topic on community discussion boards for years. “I hope that folks can be a part of the solution by joining their neighbors to clean up our city,” Hunt said. “Less talking, more action.”
