GLENS FALLS — Coxsackie-Athens' Joseph Martinez ended up needing overtime, but he finally secured the takedown to capture the Section 2 Division 2 wrestling 170-pound championship Saturday night at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls.

Martinez was well on his way to upending the top-seeded Glens Falls' Skyler Sturdevant, with a 7-4 lead entering the third period, but Sturdevant rallied with an escape and two takedowns to send the match to overtime, tied 8-8.

“Honestly, I didn’t know what the score was. I thought I was up by one, and then the coaches said overtime,” Martinez said. “From there, it was all mental, how bad you wanted it.

“He came back, but I knew I could beat him.”

About 20 seconds into extra time, Martinez secured a takedown clinching a spot at the Division 2 state championships at MVP Arena in Albany on the last weekend of February.

“It’s a great feeling getting the win, but it also feels like I have unfinished business,” Martinez said. “I went 0-2 at states last year. They were close matches, one in overtime and a decision. Going in this year as a champion, my confidence is up and I really want to place in the top eight.”

Martinez’s victory over Sturdevant is also some payback, as Sturdevant delivered one of Martinez’s two losses this season.

The Coxsackie-Athens senior is now 26-2 this season. In his first match on Saturday, Martinez picked up a first-period pin, then won a 7-5 decision in the semifinals.

“It was really important to me to get back there,” Martinez said of states, “to extend my season and live up to my expectations.”

Coxsackie-Athens also had two wrestlers earn second-place finishes.

Neil Murphy won an 11-7 decision in the 124-pound quarterfinals, and then prevailed 14-12 in a sudden victory in the semifinals. He ultimately fell to Cobleskill-Richmondville’s Ashten Haley in the championship match.

Ryker Cox earned a second-place finish for the Riverhawks in the 145-pound bracket. He picked up a 15-0 technical fall in his first match, followed by advancing via injury forfeit in the semifinals. He then fell to Greenville’s Kieran Cullen in the championship round.

Both Murphy and Cox will advance to states. While Murphy clinched his spot outright, Cox defeated Duanesburg/Schoharie’s Daniel Stealey with a 12-3 major decision in a true-second match to earn his place in Albany.

Brendan Woytowich, a 215-pounder, earned a third-place finish for Coxsackie-Athens. After winning a 7-4 decision in the quarterfinals, he fell to Mechanicville/Stillwater’s Ben Nania in the semifinals. He then won two consolation bracket matches to earn third.

Catskill’s Will Clanton brought home a fifth-place finish in the 101-pound division, going 2-2.

GREENVILLE CAPTURES TWO CROWNS

Cullen took home the 145-pound Division 2 championship for Greenville on Saturday, while teammate Joseph Davis earned the 160-pound title.

Cullen picked up a first-period pin in the quarterfinals, before a 16-2 major decision in the 145-pound semifinals. He defeated Cox with a late pin in the first period of the championship match.

Davis advanced to the 160-pound championship with pins in each of his first two matches, before going to battle with Cobleskill-Richmondville’s Kyber Henry.

In the tiebreaker round — the third overtime, Davis was able to escape from Henry to secure a 3-2 decision and the title.

At 116 pounds, Greenville’s Colby Beers worked his way up from the sixth seed to a second-place finish. He collected two pins, followed by a 7-0 decision to advance to the championship, where he lost to Galway’s Kolt Wojtowecz.

Beers ultimately dropped a true-second match against Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Jayden Acomb, narrowly missing a shot to compete at states.

Greenville’s Bryant Flensted was also able to get on the podium on Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the 285-pound bracket.

FILLI WINS FOR ICHABOD CRANE

Ichabod Crane’s Peter Filli picked up three straight pins to clinch the Division 2 101-pound title.

He won his first match in 27 seconds, and followed up with a third-period pin in the semifinals.

Filli took down Salem/Cambridge’s Jonah Stevens with a first-period pin in the championship match.

The Ichabod Crane freshman, who is 37-4 this season, will head to states for the first time, after coming in fourth place in Section 2 last season.
