Hunting Expo and local sportsmen support wounded veterans

At a regular meeting of the Catskill Mountain Fish & Game Club in Hunter this past Thursday, a special presentation was made.

The non-profit organization, “Northern Catskills Hunting & Wildlife Expo,” donated a total of $6000.00 in support of wounded veteran’s hunting programs. The “Northern Catskills Hunting & Wildlife Expo,” is an annual event held on Route 6 in Spruceton each year in late September for the benefit of wounded veterans.

Admission is always free and the event features hunting and fishing displays, a Chinese Auction, and a 50/50 raffle.

Glenn Howard and Carol Herdman spoke at the meeting on behalf of the organization before presenting the checks. They said the secret to the success of the Expo, is their dedicated team of volunteers who cover a lot of ground procuring high-quality items for their auction.

From the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge Mass, to CEO Mike Lindell’s “My Pillow Inc.” in Minnesota, (who donated 10 of his famous “My Pillows”), the team acquires highly desirable items for auction. Many donations come from businesses and individuals throughout the area.

This year they also raffled off a Ruger American bolt action rifle, and a quality brand smoker.

Russ Burton, President of the “Northern Catskills Longbeards” chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), was on hand to receive a $5000.00 donation to his NWTF Chapter to fund local wounded veteran hunting programs. Russ, who coordinates all such chapter-sponsored veterans hunting events, puts that money to good use.

It pays for veterans across the state and nation to take part in an early season bear hunt and a spring turkey hunt. All expenses needed for our wounded veterans to attend the hunts are paid including; resident and non-resident hunting licenses, airfare, and other travel, food and lodging expenses.

This makes it possible for many veterans to participate at no cost to them. It enables vets to attend who would not otherwise be able to take part in this outstanding opportunity. The $1000.00 check was donated to the Catskill Mountain Fish & Game Club for the annual veteran’s early bear hunt.

At the meeting, I learned the Wounded Veterans Hunt run by Russ and the folks at Northern Catskills Longbeards Chapter of the NWTF received national recognition this year. At NWTF’s 43rd Annual National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, the Northern Catskills Longbeards Chapter earned elite status as “NWTF Wheelin’ Sportsmen.”

Additionally, Russ, chapter Vice President, James Novak and others, earned their local chapter the “Membership Achievement Award” for “…outstanding achievement in coordinating and hosting events for individuals with mobility impairments or special needs.”

The Northern Catskills Longbeards NWTF Chapter, took out more than 20 wounded veterans during their mentored turkey hunt this past spring. This year’s early season bear hunt was successful as well.

Bob Monteleone, President of Catskill Mountain Fish & Game Club who hosts the hunt, took four vets out along with James Novak and other volunteers. The vets took one bear out of a total of five bears seen during the two-day hunt.

Although a long way off, a great way to thank those at “Northern Catskills Hunting & Wildlife Expo,” the Northern Catskills Longbeards Chapter of NWTF, and the Catskill Mountain Fish & Game Club for their extraordinary work, is to attend the next Expo in support this worthy cause.

We’ve all heard the phrase “the cost of freedom isn’t free.” Its paid for by those selfless veterans who give so much to keep us safe in support of our great nation. Let’s show our support next September by attending this worthwhile event.

With Veterans Day coming up on Monday, pledging to support next year’s “Northern Catskills Hunting and Wildlife Expo” is a great way to celebrate this solemn day of reflection in tribute to our veterans.

Happy Veterans Day & Happy Hunting, Fishing, & Trapping until next time.
