LOCAL ROUNDUP: Maple Hill baseball, softball advance in playoffs

CASTLETON — Gavin Van Kempen went 3 for 3 with two home runs and six RBI to lead No. 11 Maple Hill to a 20-2 conquest of No. 22 Berlin/New Lebanon in Monday’s Section II Class C baseball playoff game.

Joseph Brodzinski doubled and drove in two runs for Maple Hill, which earned the right to play No. 6 Rensselaer in Tuesday’s Class C quarterfinal round. Matt Jung added three singles and two RBI, Enrique Feliz had two singles and an RBI, Andrew Lensink, Jerry Stalker and Chris Bulan each had a single and an RBI, Sam Gamello singled, Jack Wildermuth had two RBI and Brody Rogers had an RBI.

Matt hart singled and drove in a run for Berlin/New Lebanon. Kasey Billert, Forrest Chaput, Konner McMillan and Danny Hunt each had a single.

Jung (6k,1bb,1h), Brodzinski (1k,1bb,2r,2h) and Colby Frzier (3k,1bb,2h) all pitched for the Wildcats.

Matt Corsey, Matt Hart and Ben Rueble combined for three strikeouts and seven walks while allowing 20 runs and 13 hits for Berlin/New Lebanon.


Maple Hill 14, Waterford 2

CASTLETON — Maple Hill scored four runs in the first inning and went on to hand Waterford a 14-2 setback in Monday’ Section II Class C softball playoff game.

Kate Brodzinski and Emma Dugan each ripped a double and single with an RBI for the No. 11 Wildcats, who advanced to play No. 6 Greenwich on Tuesday. Ryleigh Olsen contributed two singles and two RBI, Emily Coffey had two singles and an RBI and Kate Ackerman and Sydney Rogers chipped in with a single and two RBI apiece.

Ackerman was the winning pitcher, striking out six and allowing two runs and three hits.

“Very pleased with the effort and enthusiasm today,” Maple Hill coach Patrick Austin said. “We had a short lapse in focus that led to a run, but we responded by getting the bats hot in the later innings with some really nice swings. A nice team win today.”
