HUDSON — The Hudson Bluehawks hosted the Cairo-Durham Mustangs on Monday night, and earned a 70-40 Patroon Conference girls basketball victory.

Abby Jepsen led the way with 20 points, hitting six three-pointers, and her sister Katie (Jepsen) added 16 of her own.

The game was scoreless for the first 90 seconds of game time, and defense dictated the pace throughout the first period. The Bluehawks went on an 8-0 run in the latter half of the quarter, and were up 12-6 at the start of the second.

Hudson found its rhythm in the next quarter, and were quickly ahead 20-9 at the 4:20 mark. The Mustangs improved their defense for the remainder of the half and found themselves down 26-16, but in a manageable situation.

Out of the break, Hudson came out rested and faster than they had been playing to that point. The Bluehawks widened their lead thanks to a 10-1 run in the first three minutes, and putting the game out of the Mustangs’ reach.

The Jepsen sisters scored a combined 14 points in the period, as Hudson outscored Cairo-Durham 24-7 in the third.

Hudson continued with their intensity in the fourth, scoring seven straight points to start the final quarter.

The Bluehawks flirted with a 30-point win, but ultimately won by 28 at the final buzzer.

This win widens the gap between Hudson and Cairo-Durham, as they sit second and third, respectively, in the Patroon Conference behind an undefeated Maple-Hill.

Hudson will travel to Maple-Hill for another first place showdown on Friday, after their midweek matchup Wednesday against Rensselaer. Cairo-Durham will get the first crack at Maple-Hill on Wednesday before they finish out the week at Taconic-Hills and Rensselaer.
