CHATHAM — Sara Hanley hit two clutch three-pointers to key a 17-2 Hudson run in the last four minutes of the game as the Bluehawks rallied past Chatham, 38-27, in Tuesday’s Patroon Conference girls basketball action.
After Chatham led by as much as eight earlier in the half, Hanley nailed back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 27-27 with 5:21 remining in the game. The Bluehawks went on to tally the next 11 points, while keeping the Panthers scoreless to earn the victory.
“We started out real slow, real cold,” Hudson head coach Vern Cross said. “We had a couple of days off because of MLK and the girls started out slow. Amya Moore had a really big game, they were double and triple teaming Malia Jackson, so we tried to find someone that could hit the big shots for us and a big shout out to Sara Hanley. she came in and got her confidence up. We have a little saying for her, ‘let that thing go.’ She’s a great shooter and tonight she showed that. We played some really good defense. In the second half, we was able to wake the girls up and I really want to thank the crowd. The Hudson fans came out and they put us in an atmosphere like we were home and that helped us and the girls.”
Hudson (4-6) couldn’t buy a basket early on and found itself down 7-2 after one quarter and 13-11 at halftime. Chatham was up 25-18 after three quarters, but the Bluehawks went on to outscore the Panthers 19-2 over the final eight minutes.
“Hats off to coach (E.J) Jones and coach (Henry) Haye, they’re really good motivators,” Cross said. “We kept telling the girls, ‘we can win this game, but you have to wake up.” The girls were a little sleepy in the beginning, but when Sara was able to get one shot to go down, her confidence got great. We really believe in Sara, always have, and she went out tonight and showed what type of player she really is and she played great on defense, she made her rotations. I’m proud of her, proud of the whole team, but she and Amya Moore just played a hell of a basketball game. They left it all out on the court.”
Cross praised Malia Jackson, who was the focal point of the Chatham defense, for playing well, despite being double and triple-teamed most of the night.
“Here we have an eighth-grader, a 13 year-old, getting triple-teamed, but she never stopped working and she came up big for us down the stretch.”
Moore scored a game-high 14 points for Hudson. Hanley added nine and Jackson had eight.
