The Ichabod Crane girls basketball team opens the season on Saturday with a road game at Colonial Council rival Watervliet.
ICC coach Adam Vooris is hoping to build off a strong finish last season that saw the Riders go 13-4 in their last 17 games after starting the season 0-6.
"I think it is great getting back in the gym. It was almost a full year from last years sectional loss to Mechanicville and the start of this season," Vooris said.
"The feeling of getting the girls back in the gym and seeing them interact with each other and laughing has been a blessing. In a way we all needed this."
The Riders lost just one player to graduation, but that player was the heart and soul of the team, Madie Graham.
"Losing Madie to graduation was a major loss," Vooris said. "One of the all-time great scorers in our programs history. She was our only Senior last year and we go into this season fairly young again with no Seniors and only two Juniors."
Returning from last years team are Abigail Dolge (Jr.), Haley Ames (Jr.), Ashley Ames (So.), Malati Culver (So.) and Delaney More (So.).
"Each one of them bring something unique to the team and we are all excited to get back on the court together," Vooris said.
New comers to the group include 8th grader Carolina Williams, Freshmen Ava Heffner and Carien Zietsman and Sophomores Alexa Barkley and Hannah Schermerhorn.
"All of these players are coming from a very successful JV season," Vooris said.
With ICC not fielding a JV team this year, the varsity team will also be getting help in practices from a couple players who would have normally been starters on the JV team.
