CASTLETON — Catskill wrestling’s Daniel Forbes celebrated his 100th career victory this past weekend by winning the 172-pound championship at the Joe McCabe Invitational at Maple High School.
Forbes was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the heavyweight division for the second straight week, after claiming the honor the previous weekend at the Jamie Mormile Tournament in Ravena.
At the McCabe Invitational, Forbes began the day, pinning Stephen Armer of Columbia in 1:17. He advanced to the semifinal round where he defeated Logan Krouse of Duanesburg by technical fall, 15-0.
In the championship match, Forbes pinned Michael Riche of Cambridge-Salem in 1:39.
Four other local wrestlers earned titles at the McCabe Invitational: Aidin Davies of Catskill (110), Max Rulison of Coxsackie-Athens (145), Ryan Ulscht of Coxsackie-Athens (189) and Brendan Woytowich of Coxsackie-Athens (215).
Catskill’s Davies pinned Abe Ahmadzai of Watervliet-Cohoes in 1:27 in the quarterfinals, decisioned Noah Rulison of Coxsackie-Athens in the semifinals, 16-9, and pinned Abubakar Abuzaid of Columbia in the final in :29.
C-A’s Max Rulison pinned Kevin Brammer of Watervliet-Cohoes in 3:39 in the quarterfinals, won his semifinal match when Kaidan Santana of Maple Hill was injured and pinned Brayton Cary of Cambridge-Salem in the final in 2:37.
Ulscht pinned Chasin Slade-Davis of Rensselaer in :32 in the quarterfinals, pinned Matyas Brodowski of Catskill in 2:23 in the semifinals and decisioned A.J. Ficarra of Columbia in the final, 7-5.
Woytowich won a major decision victory over Joshua Hearne (14-0) in the quarterfinals, won a major decision over Nicholas Mosher (16-7) in the semifinals and decisioned Theodore Kerber of Columbia (3-2) in the final.
Rocco Salvino of Coxsackie-Athens advanced to the final round in the 138-pound class, but was pinned by Ty Roadcap of Tamarac in 4:34. Salvino pinned Dylan Hisert in :19 in the quarterfinals and decisioned Kyle Bink of Cambridge-Salem (2-0) in the semifinals, before falling in the final.
In the consolation finals, Ichabod Crane’s Peter Filli pinned Kai Pellaton of Watervliet-Cohoes in 1:29 at 102 pounds, Rey Martinez of Coxsackie-Athens pinned Adam Place of Maple Hill in 4:08 at 118 pounds and Gage Decker of Coxsackie-Athens pinned Ethan Maier of Maple Hill in 221 at 152 pounds
Columbia won the team championship with 166 points, edging Coxsackie-Athens, which finished with 160 points. Cambridge-Salem was third with 148, followed by Maple Hill 130, Watervliet-Cohoes 121, Tamarac 113, Catskill 68.5, Ichabod Crane 63, Taconic Hills 31, Duanesburg 30, Rensselaer 27, Berlin 22, La Salle Institute 18, Cairo Durham 5.
