VALATIE — The Ichabod Crane Riders failed to score Friday night and were defeated by the visiting Broadalbin-Perth Patriots, 33-0, in a Class C South football game.
Riders quarterback Austin Race went 10/18 passing, with 56 yards through the air and one interception. He also carried the ball 12 times for 71 yards on the ground. Running back Zion Evans had eight carries for 40 yards, and caught three passes for 21 receiving yards.
Connor Ackerly led the Riders’ defense with seven tackles, with Gabe DeLong and Connor Booth combining for nine. Ben Vecellio had five tackles himself, including one sack, and Quinn Rapport had two tackles and an interception.
Rapport received the opening kickoff for the Riders and returned it back to their own 33-yard line. After carries by the quarterback Race and tailback Zion Evans got next to no yardage, an incomplete pass brought up fourth down on the Riders’ opening possession. The next snap went past Ichabod Crane punter Teddy Lerman, who gathered it and somehow got an errant kick off in time. The short punt was caught by Patriots returner Camron VanSlyke and he was brought down at the Riders’ 13.
Patriots quarterback Samuel Hotaling took a delayed run up the middle, cut to the right into open space and scored the rushing touchdown. The point-after was missed though, and the Patriots’ lead stayed at 6-0 at the 9:07 mark of the first quarter. After Ryan Putnam returned the kick to Ichabod Crane’s 39, the Riders went three and out once again. Lerman got the snap and booted it down to the Patriots’ 28 yard line and gave the Riders’ defense more room to breathe.
Lerman was the first through the offensive line on the Patriots’ first scrimmage play of the drive, and tackled the running back just as he secured the handoff behind the line for a loss. Rapport stepped up next on defense for Ichabod Crane, and intercepted a pass to get the ball back for the Riders at their own 40. They managed to get a first down on the drive, but the Riders went three and out again after that and had to punt.
Lerman punted the ball out of bounds at the Patriots’ 25 yard line. On a third and short play for the Patriots, Ryan Savoie Jr fumbled the snap and had to jump on it, bringing up fourth down as a result. Evans got the punt, but his return was spotted further back than he ran because of an illegal block in the back penalty on Ichabod Crane.
The Patriots were still up 6-0 at the start of the second period and the Riders were driving. Unfortunately for Ichabod Crane, Race took the ball up the sideline on a keeper, and absorbed a hit that knocked the ball loose and the Patriots recovered. Hotaling followed it up with a huge run to get into Riders territory.
After a timeout, Collin Carter ran it to the left and down to the Riders’ 13, followed by Hotaling taking it in from 13 yards out for another rushing touchdown. The kick made it through the uprights this time around and now it was 13-0 in favor of the Patriots. Evans fumbled the ensuing kick off but fell on the loose ball quickly to prevent another turnover.
On a third and short play for Ichabod Crane, Race completed it to Nolan Space over the middle, but Space fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Patriots, capping the Riders’ momentum right there. Starting at their own 43 with 8:30 to go in the half, the Riders allowed the Patriots a couple of first downs on the drive, but stood their ground and eventually got a turnover on downs.
The teams traded the ball back again on downs and the Patriots had a few seconds left in the half to make a play. With 14 seconds left in the half, Hotaling took a deep shot to wideout Zachary Laconte, who hauled it in for a touchdown catch just before halftime. The kick after was missed and the Patriots took their 19-0 lead into the break.
The second half was not much different with the Riders unable to slow down the Patriots’ run game, or put anything cohesive together on offense themselves. The few times Ichabod Crane got enough for a fresh set of downs, they stifled their own momentum with a false start or a holding penalty.
Hotaling kept running wild in and around defenders with ease, including a 21 yard touchdown that put the Patriots up 26-0 through three quarters. The Riders began the fourth quarter with a first down after converting to end the third, but went three and out yet again. The Patriots received the punt and were content to keep the action on the ground in order to also keep the clock running.
After a timeout, the Riders’ defense got a fourth down stop and took over on downs with six minutes left in the game. After getting a first, Evans bounced it outside on a handoff and found space to take it into Patriots territory for a 20 yard gain. However, after a run for no gain by Noah Duncan was sandwiched between two incompletions, the Riders turned it back over on downs after Race checked it down to Connor Ackerley just got them back to the original line of scrimmage.
Just to add insult to injury, Hotaling found room to run on the Patriots’ final drive of the night, and scored a 63 yard touchdown to ice the game. The Riders received the kickoff and had to run two more plays before the clock ran out, and the Broadalbin-Perth Patriots earned a big 33-0 road win over the Ichabod Crane Riders.
Both teams will be on the road next week — the Patriots will play Hudson, and the Riders will take on Taconic Hills on Friday at 7 p.m.
