The Colonial Council recently wrapped up its season with an exciting championship tournament.

Going into the tournament, Ichabod Crane held the number one seed, by the end they had dropped to fourth place and Holy Names had won the league championship.

In the first round Mohonasen defeated ICC in five sets and Holy Names defeated Catholic Central. In the consolation matchup, CCHS won all three sets against Ichabod to take thirrd place. In the championship game, Holy Names defeated Mohonasen to finish first and second, respectively.

As voted on by the coaches, here are the individual award winners and our first and second team all stars.

Player of the Year

Emma Scheitinger/Ichabod Crane

Emma Scheitinger followed up an incredible Sophomore season by earning the Player of the Year award for the 2021 Season. To date, she is the leader on the team in kills (192), digs (169), passer Rating (2.04) and second in aces (93). When hitting Emma has a heavy swing that is tough to block and dig.

“Emma is an incredible athlete, she works just as hard to be the best student and a teammate,” Riders coach Adam Vooris said. “She also has the ability to bring her game to a new level. That competitiveness becomes contagious and everyone around her plays better.”

Not only is Emma a standout volleyball player, she is also one of the top softball players in all of Section II.

Senior Setter of the Year

Jada Akers/Voorheesville

Jada Akers is a four-year starter on the Varsity team at Voorheesville. Her mindset, leadership, and determination made her a great fit for the setting position. She has been the lone setter for three seasons having sole responsibility for every second ball. This season alone, Jada has accumulated over 300 assists.

“Jada simply makes our team better,” Voorheesville coach Ashley Turski said. “Whether it’s a good pass or an off target pass, Jada seems to give our hitters a chance.”

Jada plans on going to college to study pre-med.

Offensive Player of the Year

Katie Ullman/Mohonasen

Katie Ullman finished the season with 34 aces, 30 blocks,144 digs, and a school record of 166 kills. She has led the team in kills the past 2 seasons and has totaled 364 career kills.

“Katie has had an unbelievable season,” Mohonasen coach Chris Abel said. “This year she took on new roles and learned new skills to give her team the best chance to win.”

Defensive Player of the Year

Eileen Sun/Voorheesville

Eileen Sun is a 3 year starter on the Varsity team at Voorheesville. Her leadership, encouragement, and work ethic made her a great captain for her Senior season. She is consistently one of the hardest workers both on and off the court and leads by example. This season alone, Eileen has accumulated over 370 digs.

“She has worked so hard to become a really great passer,” Blackbirds coach Ashley Turski said. “It seems every time she is challenged she steps up to deliver a good pass. It helps our offense flow.”

Eileen plans to study medical or pharmaceutical science in college.
