GIRLS SOCCER: Clippers ready to get Fall 2 season started

GERMANTOWN — When the 2019 girls soccer season ended, Germantown was ranked No. 10 in the state in Class D, had earned a share of the Central Hudson Valley League championship and advanced to the Section II semifinals.

With the majority of that team returning, coach Mike Pudney could hardly wait to get the 2020 season started.

But then the coronavirus pandemic hit in early 2020 and among the many things affected was high school sports. For most Section II schools, soccer was pushed to the spring of 2021 and even then, there was no guarantee a season would be played. When schools finally got the green light to begin practicing in late February, Pudney’s Clippers got right to work.

“We are just happy to have a season for the girls,” Pudney said. “The team has been working hard in preparation for our Fall 2 season. Over 1/3 of the players have received League All-Star honors in the past and a veteran group of players, combined with many younger players that all show a great deal of promise, bode well for a season in which Germantown will be the team to beat this season.

“This will be the fifth year I have coached most of the girls and they have grown individually and more importantly as a team. What makes this team so special is the quality of student athletes they are on and off the pitch. Almost every year we have been in the league since we started four years ago we have won the sportsmanship award. It has been an honor and a privilege to see these girls grow as a team.”

Germantown opened the season on Monday at Loudonville and will host Doane Stuart today at 4:15 p.m. Two spectators per player will be allowed to attend the games.
