HUDSON — There is a new all-time leader in points scored for Catskill girls basketball.

When sophomore Janay Brantley hit a baseline jumper with 6:16 to go in the first half of Friday’s game against Hudson, she passed Casey Gallagher to become the career leader in points scored for the Cats program. Gallagher previously held the record with 1,064 points.

The Cats went on to defeat Hudson, 50-39, behind Brantley’s 18-point effort.

“I’m incredibly proud of Janay for passing the 1,000 point mark and then breaking the girls all-time career leading record,” Catskill coach Chris Quinn said. “As I’ve told people before, she’s an incredibly unselfish player who would rather make the great right pass before shooting the ball herself.

“I, at points, have to implore her to be aggressive offensively. She’s a great player and an even better person. Her parents and brothers have done a tremendous job in raising her.”

Brantley came into the game needing just four points to set a new record, but Hudson was determined to make her earn those points, limiting her to just a field goal in the first quarter.

The Bluehawks led 11-9 at the end of the opening stanza, but the Cats used a 14-8 scoring edge in the second to go up 23-19 at half, then widened the gap to 34-29 after three. Hudson pulled to within 36-34 early in the fourth quarter, but the Cats went on to outscore the Bluehawks 14-5 the rest of the way to wrap up the victory.

Brantley’s 18 led all scorers. Teammate Jayden Lewis added 13.

Abby Jepsen and Jada Alert each had 12 for the Bluehawks, who finish with a 2-5 record.

SATURDAY

Catskill 59, Greenville 54

GREENVILLE — Catskill wrapped up an undefeated season on Saturday with a 59-54 victory over Greenville at Greenville High School.

The Cats finished 6-0 in the coronavirus-pandemic shortened season, including two wins over the Spartans.

“Several years ago when Ian (Quinn) and I decided to go young we envisioned this year as the start of something special,” Catskill coach Chris Quin said. “We knew if we could get those girls Varsity experience we could sneak up and win the Patroon this year. That being said I’m so proud of my 6 girls because we literally started a week and a half after everyone because of Covid precautions and went through our schedule undefeated.

“I believe we would’ve had a great chance to win the Patroon this year based on the teams we did beat and the teams they beat. I have everyone back next year except one, but will be adding a few that opted out of this season for a few reasons. I’m already excited about the next few years. This season was short, but was sweet.”

Janay Brantley, who became Catskill’s all-time leading scorer for girls basketball on Friday, led the Cats with 20 points and 10 assists. She now has 1,099 career points with two more years to play. Hannah Konsul added 17 points and 12 rebounds and Jayden Lewis had 13 points.

Bella Trostle had 27 points for Greenville.
