KYSERIKE — The Taconic Hills field hockey team couldn’t have picked a better present to help celebrate coach Angela Webster’s birthday on Thursday.
The Titans defeated Pine Plains/Rhinebeck in a hard-fought battle, 1-0, in double overtime to win their fourth consecutive Section IX Class C championship at Rondout Valley High School.
The Titans and Bombers battled hard and neither could find the back of the cage through 60 minutes of regulation and nearly two full 10-minute overtime periods. Finally, with just 29.5 seconds remaining in the second extra session, the Titans’ Marilyn Roque-Velasquez took a feed from Ava Skabowski on a corner and put one past Pine Plains/Rhinbeck goalkeeper Alyssa Bathrick for the game-winner.
“What an amazing battle between both teams,” Webster said. “It was both impressive and exciting to watch. Both teams deserve recognition for their efforts.”
Webster couldn’t have been more proud of her team’s effort and resiliency.
“Saying I am proud of these girls doesn’t seem to do them justice,” Webster said. “Playing 80 minutes of tough field hockey is not only exhausting physically, but mentally as well.
“A win like this will stick with them forever. They kept battling and dug deeper and deeper. It is the focus, drive and determination that this team showed that I am the most proud of.
“To win a fourth consecutive sectional title in Section IX is an amazing accomplishment and a testament to the dedication and passion these girls have for field hockey.”
Taconic Hills took 13 shots on goal and six penalty corners. Pine Plains/Rhinebeck got off eights shots on goal and had four penalty corners.
The Titans advance to state regional play and will take on the Section I champion at Rondout Valley High School on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 12:30 p.m.
