COLONIE — The Greenville Spartans defeated the Mechanicville Red Raiders 2-1 Monday to win the Section 2 Class B Boys Soccer Championship at Colonie High School.
The game was fast paced and close throughout as both teams showcased their incredible passing abilities and defensive prowess. Greenville had an extended possession inside the box that was finally cleared by the Red Raider defense. The Spartans then sent a pass across the box on the attack, but it was stopped by Mechanicville keeper Dylan Raucci.
Midway through the first half, Liam Bowden found the back of the net to put the Spartans up 1-0. Joe Domermuth had his share of trouble for Greenville as well, grabbing multiple shots by the Red Raiders out of the air.
Later in the half Benjamin Reinhard rattled a shot off the crossbar but the rebound was cleared out by the defense. Mechanicville got a breakaway, taking it back out and had a golden opportunity at the other end.
Domermuth came out too far on an attempt to disrupt a shot, but Red Raider Colin McNutt was unphased and his soft touch knotted the game at one goal apiece. Mechanicville had a free kick with under a minute before halftime that did not produce a goal, but they were content to go into the break tied 1-1.
Just minutes into the second half, Bowden had a shot on goal that was caught by Raucci to keep him busy. Reinhard was called offsides on a play that would have given the Spartans a lead.
Ten minutes in, a free kick taken by Bowden sailed into the box and Jack Motta booted it in to give Greenville a 2-1 lead. The Red Raiders missed a huge opportunity to tie the game when the Spartans lost control of the ball inside their own box, but Mechanicville could not get a shot off before it was cleared.
Isaiah Edmonds was given a yellow card for tackling a Red Raider from behind, but Mechanicville could not capitalize on the subsequent free kick. Greenville had another breakaway chance on that clear, but Reinhard was called offsides again.
The Spartans did a phenomenal job of playing with just enough pressure to eat time off of the clock and force the Red Raiders to play more erratically as they got desperate to move the ball down the stretch.
Mechanicville had back to back free kicks down by the Greenville box but they were both blocked by the Spartan defense. Greenville had a chance to put an exclamation point on this game by scoring again with less than five minutes to go, but the shot they got off was wide of the far post and went out for a goal kick.
The Red Raiders had one final chance to tie the game on an attack with under a minute left in the game. They were awarded a free kick with 45 seconds to go but, unfortunately for Mechanicville, it went too far and was ruled a goal kick. Domermuth took his time, set the ball up, and kicked it high and far to the sound of the final whistle as the Greenville Spartans clinched the Section 2 Class B Boys Soccer Title with a 2-1 victory over the Mechanicville Red Raiders.
The Spartans improved 20-0 will now compete in regional play on Saturday against the winner of the Beekmantown-Salmon River game, which will be played on Wednesday.
Saturday’s site will either be at St. Lawrence High School, Ogdensburg High School or Plattsburgh High School, depending on who wins Wednesday’s game.
A win on Saturday would vault Greenville into the state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Middletown against the Far West champ.
