To the editor:

Just like Judith Viorst’s storybook character in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Donald Trump’s day is filled with disappointment too. And it happens everyday. Despite the President’s insistence that all students return to full time, in person learning, many schools were quickly forced to close again as outbreaks occurred among large numbers of students and teachers. The virus, far from disappearing, is surging across our country, and more than 170,000 Americans have already died.

It was a very bad day for the President when Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden picked Kamala Harris as his running mate. The President’s sexist tropes, calling Senator Harris “nasty, angry, and horrible” and false birtherism claim fell flat. His racist appeals to “suburban housewives” claiming that the Biden/Harris ticket would kill the suburbs, also fell flat. Woman aren’t buying it.

The President’s lies delegitimizing mail in voting, and his effort to sabotage the United States Postal System, have angered seniors and veterans all at the same time. The organization VoteVets put out a stinging video saying “After five draft deferments Donald Trump has finally found a war he wants to fight — against the USPS! If he served, he’d know veterans rely on the USPS for voting, medication and employment. We take this VERY personally, and so should you.”

America needs competent and compassionate leadership. Vote for the Biden/Harris ticket. Vote early or absentee or on Election Day. Just vote like your life depends on it — because it truly does.
