Pat Ryan, the Democratic Congressional candidate in our district, graduated from West Point and served two combat tours in Iraq as an army intelligence officer. That is important to note not only because military service demonstrates a commitment to one’s country, but because the interests of veterans in today’s political climate are best protected when they are represented by veterans.
On July 27, 80 percent of Senate Republicans blocked the PACT Act, designed to provide better health care for 3.5 million veterans who were exposed to toxic burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan. Just weeks ago, the bill sailed through Congress, but when Democrats passed the CHIPs bill, subsidizing domestic semiconductor manufacturing, and then announced a vote on a mega-bill that provides billions for climate action and health care, giving them another potentially huge political win, the Republicans, furious, decided to jettison the PACT bill. Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Steve Daines (R-MT) even shared a fist bump to celebrate their “victory.”
Seventy-eight years ago, my father landed on a Normandy beach. Grievously wounded, he made a full recovery, thanks to the health care he received. Like most Americans who honor the service of veterans, I believe that one way we can repay them is to ensure them the very best health care. Considering that Senate Republicans have killed a bill that would help 3.5 million veterans, I intend to vote for Pat Ryan on Aug. 23 in the Democratic primary.
It seems the right thing to do.
