To the editor:
A recent letter to this paper from Ms. Barbara Valicenti, contained several statements that should not be left unchallenged. Ms. Valicenti expressed her concern that our personal freedoms are being sacrificed in the struggle with the Covid-19 pandemic. There are many, such as our small businesses, who have suffered greatly during these times. However, the precautions, that most of us are being asked to follow, are relatively minor compared to what is the most serious health crisis that the world has faced in many decades.
The 9/11 attacks resulted in over 3,000 deaths and became permanently etched in our collective memories. This new enemy has already resulted in 220,000 fatalities, and yet many still see it as minor annoyance. Somehow this country, with the greatest healthcare systems in the world, has ended up being No. 1 in total cases and in the number of deaths.
Ms. Valicenti goes on to try and ridicule Joe Biden because he operated out of his home during the pandemic and almost always wears a mask in public. This concession is billed as an act of cowardice. I respond by suggesting that Mr. Biden’s actions show that he understands the nature of this virus, cares about his countrymen and feels obligated to act as an example for this nation. His actions contrast with those of our President who refuses to take such precautions and instead undermines the advice of our scientific community by encouraging those in his audiences to foolishly follow his example. How Mr. Biden’s actions show disrespect to our to our military is a mystery to me?
