The Supreme Court just overturned Constitutional protection for abortion, leaving the decision to individual states. Legislatures in half of them will move quickly to require 33 million women and girls to carry their pregnancies to term, often even in cases of rape or incest. Several will try to criminally prosecute New York health providers who provide abortions or “Plan C” drugs to women from these states.
We are proud and grateful that New York legalized abortion in 1970, and our 2019 Reproductive Health Act made abortion a health right. In its 2022 session, the State Legislature strengthened protections for providers and patients from actions by other states. (A shout-out to State Senator Michelle Hinchey for her work on these bills.)
But we are witnessing the start of a dark time for women, a time we thought we would never see again. People are going to die. There is one more step: pass the Equality Amendment. It would enshrine reproductive autonomy in the State Constitution, and include new populations, like LGBTQ people, in its protections. Passage got close in June. It could still pass if there is a special session this summer.
New Yorkers overwhelmingly support women’s rights to decide. In fact, most Americans support abortion rights. Most the world’s nations do too, including heavily Catholic countries like Italy, Ireland, and Mexico. Our country is going backwards. We take no position on what a woman does with her own body, but we must defend her right to choose.
