To the editor:

High School basketball and volleyball have started. But many Columbia County students are being excluded from participation. Jack Mabb (Columbia County DOH) along with the six superintendents of the Columbia County schools have decided that only students that have gotten the COVID shot can participate in winter sports. Almost 2 years into this, we now know that this virus is only a serious threat to older folks and those with underlying health issues. Healthy schoolchildren playing sports are not a health hazard to others. Fauci himself has finally publicly acknowledged that the shot does not prevent transmission. So, the question remains, why implement this policy?

The real hypocrisy here is that there are 77 other schools in our conference that are not using a policy like this. So, when the games begin, “unvaccinated” athletes from other schools will be competing in OUR gymnasiums, while our students sit on the sidelines.

Many of the parents have reached out to the county supervisors and other town representatives throughout Columbia County. The response has varied from sympathy to annoyed condescension. But at the end of the day, nothing was done about it. It’s evident that no one in county leadership or school leadership cares that they are discriminating against their own constituents. Anyone thinking of relocating here with children should take that into consideration. It’s a disgrace.
