To the editor:
The talking heads scoff at it and elected Republicans universally denounce it and mock the Democrats hammering out agreement on Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plans to improve American life more than anything since FDR’s New Deal. Huge majorities of Americans, including Republicans, support the individual pieces, like making permanent tax credits for virtually all families with children, like helping working parents pay for day care, like expanding Medicaid to millions and bringing down the cost of prescription drugs for seniors and making big investments in fighting the climate change that is destroying farms and forests and livelihoods with fire and flood.
America really needs B.B.B. not just to address the current needs of the majority of ordinary Americans but to keep our economy competitive with Europe and Asia. It has passed the House but rejection by all 50 Republicans has blocked passage in the Senate. To have a chance, this bill needs to be passed before the Congress takes off for the holidays. What can we do? Phone leader Chuck Schumer (202-224-6542) and demand that he delay the recess until B.B.B. is brought to the floor for an up or down vote. Let us see how many, just before Christmas, will vote down a bill paid for by taxes on the very wealthy and designed, among so many benefits, to take on big pharma and lift millions of children out of poverty.
