To the Editor:

Your story about child abuse by Natasha Vaughn (“Reports down, but child abuse stead,” RS, April 9, 2021) is one of the most important stories you have published in the last 18-months, including all the terrible reports about Covid-19. In my reporting and writing days I did a number of stories about child abuse victims and can testify that there are few crimes with more severe and long-lasting impacts than child abuse.

Whether it’s physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or just plan neglect, the effects are serious, long-lasting, and very hard to reverse.

My thanks to Julianne Bauman of the Child Advocacy Center of Columbia and Greene Counties for emphasizing the seriousness of this problem and to the Register Star for publishing the story on the front page. If you see something, say something.
