To the editor:

General Colin Powell’s death broke all of our hearts. He was an officer and a gentleman and a statesman and a true patriot. Several years ago I invited him to attend my Interact Club’s MLK March for Peace and Justice A few days later, there was a message on my landline answering machine: a woman’s voice introduced herself as General Powell’s assistant. She paused and then informed me that the general was on the line. Colin Powell graciously “RSVP”ed that he would be unable to attend because he had a previous commitment. The General spoke to me; he spoke to America; he spoke to the entire world...in words of wisdom; in deeds of decency; and in his character abundantly blessed with courage, kindness and unwavering integrity.

As I salute him, I sing to myself a paraphrase from a line in “All In the Family” theme song: “We sure can use a man like Colin Powell again.”

There...I have had my say!
