Robert Dewey Carl

Robert Dewey Carl, age 81 years, of Earlton, N.Y. and Etero, FL. Passed away on Thursday, February27, 2020. Bob was born in Catskill, N.Y. on July 5, 1938, youngest son of John L. Carl and Dorothy E. (Baker) Carl who predeceased him.

Bob attended the one room schoolhouse in Jefferson Heights until its closing in 1948. He attended Irving School and Junior/Senior High in Catskill School District, graduation gin 1956. Bob served his country in The U.S. Navy from 1958-1962 serving aboard the USS Nantahala (A060) Fleet Oiler as Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class (E-5). He was employed for B & G contractors in plumbing and heating from 1962until 1966. Bob was retired from New York Telephone, (NYEX-Verizon) as Lineman Outside Plant Technician, Business Group working on PBX’s and Special Service technician from 1966-1994.

Bob was dedicated for years to the Greenville Volunteer Fire Company, joining in 1963, serving as a life Member, Pat Chief, Past President, and Past Chairman of the Fire commissioner. He was one of the organizers, Past Captain, and Charter Member of the Greenville Rescue Squad. Bob served as Chairman of the Greene County Fire Advisory Board, Past President and Treasurer of the Greene County Fire Chiefs Association. Bob was also a member of the Greene County Volunteer Firemen Association since 1963-1967. Bob was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of American, retired CWA Local 12120, he was active with Greene County Meals on Wheels, a member of the Greene County Historical Society, and a Life Member with the NYS Blue Bird Society. He was active with Greene County Extension and a Master Gardener. He retired from the American Red Cross Volunteer Disaster Relief, both local and national, a member of the American Legion Post - 983, Cairo, N.Y. He as a past member of the Gold Wong Road Riders of American, Chapter L in Coxsackie, N.Y. Bob enjoyed gardening, growing garlic and then giving most of it away, riding his motorcycle, traveling in his RV with his loving wife, Joan. Bob and Joan spent their winters at Riverwoods Plantation RV Resort in Estero, FL, where he was very active in the park’s activities. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, playing tennis when he could find the time, and enjoyed feeding and watching the birds around his house.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 29 years Joan Goulding Carl, son Robert A. Carl and wife Diane, daughter Elizabeth Ann Carl Phillips and husband Kurt, and daughter Denise Carl Hughes and husband Scott. Grandchildren Daniel and Heather Carl, Hunter (Finacee Sadie), Dalton, and Kolby Phillips, and Sarah (Mike) Brennan, Emma, and Noah Hughes, sister Pearl Carl Smith and several nieces and nephews in Greene and Columbia Counties. Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his brother John L. Carl Jr. and sisters Loraine Carl Osborn and Mary Lou Carl Lampman.
