Mildred Friedrich

Mildred Friedrich, age 91, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2020, at Thompson House, a residential health care facility, in Rhinebeck, NY. Born January 31, 1929 in Baldwin Long Island to parents William and Karolina Strohmeier, the family moved to East Taghkanic, NY and owned and operated their family dairy farm.

Milly had four children, Jim and Linda from her first marriage to Gordon Piester, and Larry and Dan from her second marriage to William Friedrich. She was predeceased by both husbands and her younger brother William Strohmeier.

Milly loved music and played the piano and clarinet. At Roeliff Jansen School in Hillsdale, NY, she was active in extracurricular activities. She sang in the choir and played the clarinet in the orchestra and marching band and was selected to be a member of the New York All-State Band. She graduated Valedictorian of the class of 1947. She obtained an Associate’s Degree from the Eastern School for Physicians’ Aides in New York City and worked as a medical secretary for local ophthalmologist, Dr. Henry Little. She also worked at the Hudson School for Girls, later to become the Brookwood Secure Center. She then worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital for more than 25 years as a Medical Transcriptionist before retiring in 1998.

At home, Milly made great Sunday and holiday dinners, many of which are still being replicated by family members. She treasured the views surrounding her rural home and enjoyed planting trees and flowers in her lovely yard. She especially enjoyed the cascade of ever-changing wild flowers throughout the seasons and loved the birds that are so plentiful in the meadows surrounding her home, knowing what kind of bird each was by sight and sound. Later, while not so active with gardening, she viewed the changing of the seasons through her windows and on the deck of her home and admired the many trees she nurtured as saplings through maturity. She enjoyed the company of her many pets over the years.

Milly is survived by her son Jim Piester and his wife Laura, her daughter Linda and her husband Gene, her son Larry and his wife Nicole, her son Dan and his wife Lynne, and three grandchildren, Becky, Hailyn and Claire. All of these she touched deeply with her love.

Funeral services at the Bates & Anderson Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home will be Thursday November 5, at 1:30pm. Visitation prior to services will be from 1:00-1:30.

Contributions in her honor may be made to the Columbia-Green Humane Society, 111 Humane Society Rd, Hudson, NY 12534.
