Marcia M. Castle

Marcia M. Castle, 88, a longtime resident of Catskill, passed peacefully on January 13, 2020 in Melbourne, FL surrounded by loved ones.

Marcia was born on May 28, 1931 and was raised in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from Rosemont College, Philadelphia, PA in 1953 with a BA in Biology and Education. She married Dr. Paul D. Englert in December 28, 1953 in Philadelphia, PA and later moved to Catskill, NY in 1956 to raise their growing family after spending 3 years at Ft. Hood, Texas. Marcia pursued a master’s degree in Reading Education from the College of St. Rose, Albany, NY where she graduated in 1972. She worked at the Catskill Central School district between 1971-1973 and again in 1975-1984 as an itinerant special education reading teacher for grades K-12 for the diagnosis and remediation of various reading problems at various schools throughout Catskill. In November of 1984, Marcia took a position with the NY State Department of Corrections at the Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie, NY where she taught reading and adult basic education to inmates until her retirement in June 1994.

Marcia was a lifelong learner with a passion for the anatomy and workings of the human brain. She was fascinated by and kept up with the latest discoveries made in that field. Marcia loved to read, enjoyed cooking large family meals and was happiest when spending time with family and friends. She loved to travel, including trips abroad to Great Britain, Panama, Kenya and domestically to many states to visit with family and friends. Marcia was always concerned about others and was quick to help others where needed. She was generous with her time, participating on various school and zoning boards, and volunteered at the Olana Historic Site, Literacy of America, and She was a devout catholic with unwavering faith in God and was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill, NY where she served on numerous committees, and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Melbourne, FL.

Marcia is preceded in death by husband Sidney S. Castle, parents John Joseph and Nora Fee Murray of Philadelphia, PA and sister Nancy M. Howley of Westchester, PA. She is survived by ten children and many grandchildren. In November 1985, she and Sidney married creating a large blended family with Marcia’s eight children from a prior marriage (Dr. Paul D. Englert) who include Jayne Englert-Burns, Paul (“Rip”) D. Englert, Jr., Georgia Stephanie (“Stevie”) Englert-Long, Mark C. Englert, Phillip M. Englert, Marcia (“MJ”) (Englert) Walters, Matthew B. Englert, and Mary (Englert) Johannessen and Sidney’s two children from a prior marriage (Emily Maguire Castle) Joseph S. Castle Sr. and James M. Castle.

Marcia and Sid moved to Melbourne Florida in March 2014 to enjoy the warmer weather and sunshine, where they met many new friends, and yet always considered Catskill, NY home.

Funeral service will be Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 10:00 am Traver-McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, NY immediately followed by a graveside service at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill, NY. In Lieu of flowers, donations in her name should be sent to Saint Patrick’s Church, 66 William Street, Catskill, NY 12414.
