Laura Rose (Scalera) Zitto

Zitto

Laura Rose (Scalera) Zitto, 85 of Niagara Falls, NY (formerly Niverville NY) passed into eternal peace on February 2, 2021 at her home surrounded by family. She was born on July 24, 1935 in Hudson NY daughter of Carle and Mary (De Joy) Scalera.

Laura is survived by her loving daughter Angie Zitto of Niagara Falls, NY, a brother Charles (Sylvia) Scalera of Hudson, and a sister Margaret (John) Russo of Hudson, a special cousin Vincent (Theresa) Stocchetti of Stockport, special longtime family friend Rose Kostek and several other cousins, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Laura was predeceased by her husband Santi Zitto, her grand-daughter Kelsie Leigh Hayes and her two sisters Rose Allen and Anna Alonge.

Laura grew up in Hudson New York. After marrying Santi in 1963, they later moved to Niverville, NY in 1968. In 2015 she and her husband moved to Niagara Falls NY so her daughter could care for them both.

In her years Laura was known for her gift of gab and quick wit, and her need to help people, whether babysitting the young neighbor children or helping care for an elderly neighbor. Always looking out for people, Laura would pick up groceries for friends who couldn’t get out of the house to the store, and she was an avid walker well into her seventies before she got sick. Laura enjoyed Bingo and continued right up until recently while she attended the Ralph J. Wilson Jr. Adult Day program in North Tonawanda NY.

She was able to live at home with her daughter right up until her passing due to the continued support of wonderful home aides who made that possible. De’lona Mitchell and Fran Greig both of Niagara Falls were long time caregivers.

Laura’s family will forever be grateful to the wonderful employees at the Ralph Wilson Center who were kind and caring and made it possible for her to attend day program right up until the very end and to the Niagara County Hospice organization for their support.

The family will be planning a memorial service later in the spring/summer.
