Josephine Dorothy Barkman

Josephine Dorothy Barkman, loving mother and grandmother, age 94 years, formerly of Earlton, N.Y., passed away on April 30, 2020, at The Pines Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Catskill, N.Y.

Josephine was born on December 2, 1925 in N.Y.C., N.Y. and is the daughter of the late Nicholas and Emilia (Saggio) Alberti. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her two brothers Sam and John and her sister Mae. Josephine graduated from Cathedral High School in N.Y.C.. Her work-life took her from Grace Lines in N.Y.C. to Remington Arms in Conn.. She was one of the original staff members of Columbia-Greene Community College. Josephine retired from the IRS in Albany, N.Y.. She moved to Greenville, N.Y. in the early sixties, and settled in the Coxsackie area. During her lifetime, Josephine was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Coxsackie, N.Y. Josephine was guided by her spirituality, serving as a mentor for people entering the Catholic faith and serving St. Mary’s as a Eucharistic Minister. She put family and those in need first, always willing to help others. Her Christian spirit and selflessness were an example to all.

She was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her four children Annemarie Barkman and her fiance’ Chris, Marlene Merchant and her husband Donald, Michael Barkman and his wife Brenda and Lisa Herdman and her husband Mark. She also is survived by her eight grandchildren Brooke Raveendranath, Zachary Spadafora, Bryan Merchant, Michael Merchant, Kayla Barkman, Nicholas Tryon, Rhoderick Herdman and Lyda Jo Herdman. Also survived by her six great grandchildren Maya and Luca Raveendranath, Emilia Spadafora, Noah and Summer Merchant and Joshua Merchant.

Contributions may be made in Josephine’s memory to her beloved St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 80 Mansion St., Coxsackie, N.Y. 12051 or The Pines at Catskill - Activity Fund, 154 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, N.Y. 12414. The family is grateful for the care and activities provided to Josephine while in residence. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of The W. C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie, N.Y. 12051. A celebration of her life will take place in the future. Interment will be held at The Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Hawthorne, N.Y.
