Helene Frank Schelling

It is with heartfelt loss that we announce the passing from this life of our Mother and Oma, Helene Frank Schelling. She passed peacefully at her home on January 2, in Catskill, New York, having lived 92 years. Our Mother’s love for her family, her endless energy, her giving nature and wise life advice will be deeply missed.

Helene was born on March 5, 1928 in Odessa, Ukraine. During WWII, she fled Odessa when she was 16 with her parents and siblings. They moved across Europe to Austria and Germany before immigrating to the United States in 1952. Helene married Edwin Schelling on September 25, 1954 and then moved to Catskill, making it her permanent home. They were married for 46 years until Ed’s death in 2000.

Helene had many interests in both her young and adult life which included horseback riding, skiing, singing in a women’s choral group, travel, dancing, her flower and vegetable garden and always welcoming friends and family to her home for her wonderful baked goods and cooking. Many recipes, particularly her apfel kuchen, have been passed over the years to her family to enjoy and remember. Helene is remembered as the family historian with her many stories and for her value of family.

Helene is preceded in death by her husband Ed, her parents Konstantin and Eugenia Frank, her brother Willy (Margrit), sister Hilda (Walter) and brothers-in-law Oscar and Russel. She is survived by her son Donald Schelling (Jennifer Greco) of Acra, NY, her daughter Heidi (Dana Bertogli) of Evanston, Il, her grandchildren Michael Bertogli, Lilly Schelling and Erica Bertogli, sisters-in-law Marie Schelling and Gloria O’Neil and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helene’s family will honor her life with a private internment and remembrance. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in these difficult times.

The family would like to thank Helene’s team of caregivers over the last 5 years who cared for her with love and dignity, helping her to remain in the home which she loved.
