The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo have officially been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, according to Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The latest the Olympics could be held is the summer of 2021, according to Abe.

The International Olympic Committee announced Sunday they had an April deadline to decide whether the Olympics should take place this year.

The Olympics were one of the final organizations to push back a decision about canceling or suspending their events. The NBA and NHL shut down on March 11 after athlete Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus, and the MLB pushed back the start of baseball season. The NCAA canceled March Madness as well.

There was some hope the Olympics could be salvaged, but some countries — including Canada and Australia — recently announced they would not participate if the games happened this year. USA Swimming called for postponement as well.

Abe said the IOC’s committee chief was “100%” behind the decision.

The modern Olympics have never been postponed before, although they have been canceled due to war.
