COXSACKIE — The body of a U.S. Marine from Coxsackie was scheduled to return home early Saturday morning, according to the Greene County Veterans Service Agency.

Lance Corporal Colby R. Lord, 20, died in a non-military-related motorcycle accident May 15, according to the New Mexico State Police.

Lord’s body was flown to Boston, Friday evening, landing at about 9:41 p.m. Lord’s family and a U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard were awaiting his arrival and provided honors as Lord was brought off the plane.

The Marine Corps was scheduled to provide a funeral escort from Boston to Brady’s Funeral Home in Coxsackie.

Family, friends, community members and fellow firefighters were scheduled to line Mansion Street to welcome the Marine home. Lord was a member of the Earlton Fire Department.

The escort was scheduled to arrive at Exit 21B at 2 a.m., where it would be met by fire trucks, ambulances and police vehicles that joined the escort to the funeral home.

The accident that took Lord’s life occurred May 15 in Luna County, New Mexico.

At about 9:41 a.m., police and rescue crews responded to Interstate 10, near milepost 73, west of Deming, New Mexico.

The initial investigation into the crash indicated a 2021 Harley Davidson motorcycle was being driven west in the right lane of travel by Lord, when he attempted to pass a 2022 Freightliner commercial motor vehicle and struck the right rear end of the truck’s trailer, police said.

Lord sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of Medical Investigator, police said.

Lord was born on Jan. 31, 2002, in Albany. He graduated from the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District in June of 2020, according to family members.

Lord enjoyed playing on several Little League and Pop Warner teams and moved on to play modified and varsity high school sports such as football and wrestling.

Lord was a 2020 Class C Section 2, 182 lb. Champion in wrestling, placing third in his weight class. He loved wrestling and was known for his signature takedown move of picking up his opponents and slamming them to the mat, family members said.

As a child, Lord was a member of Cub Scouts and moved up to Boy Scouts, where he earned their highest rank, becoming an Eagle Scout in 2020.

Lord joined the Earlton Fire Department at the age of 16 and earned interior and exterior firefighting certificates, family members said.

During his senior year in school, Lord joined the Marine Corps through the early enlistment program. In August of 2020 he was sent to Parris Island where he worked his way to the title of U.S. Marine. He graduated from boot camp on Nov. 13, 2020, as Private First Class. He then went on to Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina, and Military Occupational Specialties training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Lord was then stationed at Camp Pendleton in California and was promoted to Lance Corporal on May 1, 2021.

Calling hours will take place on Wednesday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m., at the W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at the W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, with interment being held with full military honors at noon at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville.

“He was a friend to all, a protector of many, had a smile that could light up a room and he will forever be missed,” family members said.
