GHENT — An Orange County man was taken to Columbia Memorial Health on Thursday following a two-car accident in Ghent.

Patrick Pierpoint, 30, of Middletown, had minor injuries following the crash, Lt. John Rivero of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

The other driver, Ciaran Black, 17, was not injured.

At about 2:05 p.m., Pierpoint was driving a Subaru west on county Route 22. When he got to the intersection with Route 9H, Pierpoint failed to yield the right of way and was struck on the driver’s side by a pickup truck that was being driven north on Route 9H by Black, Rivero said.

Both vehicles came to rest in a grassy area on the west side of Route 9H.

West Ghent Fire Company and Greenport Rescue Squad were sent by Columbia County 911 to the scene.

Route 9H was down to one lane of alternating traffic while crews worked. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputy David Stevens and Sgt. Jeff Hofstetter investigated. They were assisted by state police.

Route 9H was reopened and all firefighters were back in service at 2:56 p.m.
