LEEDS — A Greene County man was arrested Thursday on felony drug possession charges after he attempted to swallow cocaine, Steven Nevel, public information officer for state police Troop F, said Friday.
James K. Bell, 44, Cairo, was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony, fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class C felony, third-degree criminal possession of a narcotic drug, with intent to sell, a class B felony, tampering with physical evidence, a class E felony, second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor, and first-degree operator impaired by drugs, a class U misdemeanor, Nevel said.
At about 4:49 p.m., police were called to the Xtra Mart convenience store on Route 23B, after they received a report of a man sleeping in a vehicle. When Bell woke up and saw troopers, he allegedly attempted to destroy the evidence by eating the cocaine he had, Nevel said.
Bell was arrested at the scene and was held by police.
He is scheduled to appear in Catskill Town Court.
