NASSAU — Eight teenagers from Greene County have been arrested and charged in connection with a reported gang assault that occurred on July 31 in Nassau, Rensselaer County Sheriff Patrick A. Russo said Thursday.
The male victim, 21, who was not identified by police, was taken to Albany Medical Center with “significant injuries,” Russo said.
Devon Newman, 19, of Catskill was charged Aug. 20 with first-degree assault and second-degree gang assault, both felonies, Russo said.
Seven other teens from Greene County, who range in age from 15 to 17, were charged with first-degree assault, second-degree gang assault and second-degree assault, all felonies, Russo said.
The man who police believe instigated the assault, Tyler Kruegler, 19, of Latham, was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree gang assault and second-degree assault, all felonies, Russo said. Kruegler was also charged with second-degree menacing and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, both misdemeanors, Russo said.
Police did not identify the type of weapon used.
Also arrested was Ryan Duryea, 19, of Nassau. He was charged with prohibited sale of an alcoholic beverage and giving or selling alcohol to a person under 21 years old, Russo said.
On July 31, just after midnight, Rensselaer County 911 sent Rensselaer County sheriff’s deputies to a reported assault that occurred in an abandoned gravel pit located between Smith Road and Averill Park Road in the town of Nassau.
When police arrived, they found a 21-year-old man lying on his back, with significant injuries all over his body, Russo said. Deputies administered first aid to the man until Hoags Corners Ambulance arrived and took the man to Albany Medical Center.
The alleged assault occurred at a party attended by 400 to 600 people and promoted ahead of time on social media, Russo said.
Police investigators gathered statements from witnesses, identified suspects and coordinated with other police agencies, including state police at Catskill, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Village of Catskill Police.
Newman was arraigned in Sand Lake Town Court and was taken to the Rensselaer County Jail, where he was held on $2,500 bail. He has since made bail and was released, Russo said.
Kruegler was arraigned in Nassau Town Court and was taken to the Rensselaer County Jail, where he was held on $5,000 bail. He also made bail and was released, Russo said.
The Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office recommended that Kruegler be held without bail due to a violent felony case pending in Troy, Russo said.
Duryea was released with appearance tickets for court.
The cases of the seven underage suspects from Greene County will be heard in Family Court, Russo said.
