CAIRO — The Greene County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that one person died in a Saturday morning fire in Cairo.

The fire, at 853 Old Route 23, was fully involved when first responders arrived shortly after 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Fire, police and ambulance crews worked in frigid cold temperatures to douse the flames.

Firefighters found a body thought to be an adult male when they were doing an overhaul of the home. The person has not been identified.

Eight fire companies provided mutual aid and battled the fire.

The fire is being investigated by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the Greene County Cause and Origin and Hazmat teams.
