COXSACKIE — An inmate at the medium-security Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie was found dead on Saturday, an email statement from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision confirmed Thursday.

Jason Phillips, 38, was pronounced dead at the facility at approximately 1 a.m. on Dec. 15, according to DOCCS spokeswoman Rachel Connors.

Phillips was serving a sentence of 19 1/2 to 22 1/2 years, plus two years post-release supervision, after being convicted on two counts of second-degree attempted robbery, tampering with physical evidence, first-degree robbery, third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and first-degree attempted promotion of prison contraband, according to Connors.

Phillips was incarcerated in 2011.

The official cause of death will be determined and released by the Greene County Coroner’s Office, according to DOCCS. An exact cause of death has not been determined.

Connors said in an email statement that DOCCS could not comment further on Phillips’ death because it is the subject of an ongoing investigation.

She added that the facility has had no deaths as of December 1, 2023. In 2022, an inmate at the facility died due to COVID.
