HUDSON — A fire Saturday afternoon in the city of Hudson has left six families homeless, Hudson Fire Chief Anthony Demarco said.

Hudson and Greenport firefighters were dispatched by Columbia County 911 to 225 Allen St. around 4:10 p.m. for a reported structure fire.

Arriving firefighters reported there was heavy smoke coming from the third floor and requested mutual aid from Catskill and Claverack fire companies, Demarco said.

Firefighters gained access to the roof, venting it to relieve smoke and heat from inside the building, fire officials reported.

Other firefighters entered the three-story building to check if anyone was still inside and announced the building was clear, Demarco said.

A second mutual aid call was put in, and firefighters from Stottville and Germantown responded.

The fire was reported to be out around 5:30 p.m., according to Hudson fire officials. Firefighters then began checking to see if there were any hot spots that could reignite, the chief reported.

The building at 225 Allen St. had heavy fire damage on the second and third floors, as well as the attic. The apartments next door, at 223 Allen St., had fire damage to the third floor, and smoke and water damage on the first and second floors, Demarco said.

No residents were injured, however two firefighters suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze, Demarco said.

The Red Cross is assisting the victims, Demarco said.

Hudson Police are handling the fire investigation. Athens firefighters were on standby at the Hudson Central firehouse.

Greenport Rescue, National Grid and the Hudson Department of Public Works assisted at the scene. All firefighters were back in service at 9:35 p.m.
