HUDSON — Two Hudson-area businessmen have created a fund to make sure no animal ever goes without food or medical treatment, Ron Perez, president and CEO of the Columbia-Greene Humane Society, said Thursday.

Russ Gibson and Duncan Calhoun presented two checks to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society for the Zamboni Fund, which is a dedicated fund to support the shelter’s free Pet Food Bank and their low-cost veterinary clinic, Perez said.

The fund was created in memory of their beloved Shar-Pei, Zamboni, who they adopted from the shelter in 2013.

“Zam,” as they called him, never stopped wagging his tail and brought joy and happiness to everyone he met. Zam filled their lives with unconditional love until his passing in 2020, Perez said.

Russ and Duncan, along with their Shar-Peis, Nick and Nora, presented a check for $50,000 to the humane society in March, which will be earmarked for the fund, Perez said.

The men have committed $175,000 for the fund, which will keep the shelter’s two services running. Their desire is to encourage the public to contribute to the Zamboni Fund.

More than 40,000 pounds of pet food are distributed by the shelter’s pet food bank annually to area residents, who need assistance in feeding their pets. More that 3,000 dogs and cats are served annually through the humane society’s low-cost veterinary clinic. The clinic provides a spay and neuter service, vaccinations, testing, treatment of minor injuries and basic dental work.

Donations to the Zamboni Fund are tax deductible, and can only be used for the pet food bank or veterinary clinic.
