KISKATOM — Five cars were destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon at a Greene County business, Kiskatom Fire Chief Joe Caputo said Wednesday.

The cars were parked in a lot behind Gallagher’s Garage, 4579 Route 32, in Kiskatom, Caputo said.

At about 12:32 p.m., Kiskatom Fire Company was sent by Greene County 911 to Gallagher’s after receiving a report of a car that was on fire. Police arrived on the scene first and reported that multiple vehicles were burning, Caputo said.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they were able to stop the fire after it had spread to five cars, Caputo said.

The fire began when workers were attempting to move the first car, which caught fire from an electrical short. The fire then spread quickly to the other vehicles, Caputo said.

Gallagher’s is used as an impound lot for Greene County. Management was checking into who owned the destroyed vehicles, Caputo said.

There were no reported injuries in the incident.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office and state police assisted at the scene.
