CATSKILL — An increase in the number of COVID cases has prompted health departments in Greene and Columbia counties to recommend people wear masks in public places.
The statements are not mandates or orders and are strictly voluntary at this time.
As of Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has indicated Columbia County and Greene County’s community Level is high. The basic recommendation is to wear a mask indoors in public and on public transportation.
The CDC and the New York State Health Department also call on individuals to stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccines, get tested if you show symptoms and consider taking additional precautions if you are at high risk for severe illness.
Greene County posted its recommendation on Facebook on Saturday, while Columbia County issued its statement Tuesday. The contents of the statements are identical.
In Greene County, the total number of positive cases since March 2020 is 14,388. The number of current active cases is 77 and the number of new cases is 51, according to the latest statistics posted as of Jan. 12, 2023. Eleven people are hospitalized and the total number of COVID-related deaths is 149.
In Columbia County, where COVID statistics were last updated for the week of Jan. 9, 2023, and do not include total positive cases, current active cases and new cases, 22 people are currently hospitalized, two are in the intensive care unit and the number of deaths to date is 168.
