CATSKILL — At least one person has died in a two-car accident on Friday afternoon in Catskill.

The crash happened on Route 9W, just north of Embought Road.

At about 3:59 p.m., Greene County 911 sent Catskill Fire Company and Catskill Ambulance to the scene after receiving reports of the accident. The reports also said that someone may be trapped in the vehicle.

Catskill fire officials arrived and quickly closed Route 9W between Embought Road and Route 23A.

All available manpower was requested to the scene.

Fire and rescue crews went to work. Fire police diverted traffic traveling north over Embought Road.

The Greene County Coroner’s Office was requested to the scene.

A Life Net helicopter was placed on stand-by, but was not needed.

Route 9W was closed for several hours while the accident was investigated.

State police were on the scene. Catskill police assisted with the road closure.

While crews were working at this accident, they were notified by Greene County 911 of a second accident, a three-car collision on Route 23 at the Rip Van Winkle Bridge approach, where a woman reported minor injuries.

Catskill Fire and Catskill Ambulance responded, but determined they were not needed.

Although the second crash was minor, it created a traffic backup nearly two miles long. Traffic heading west on Route 23 was backed up as far as Columbia-Greene Community College at times.

Catskill police investigated the second crash.
