CATSKILL — A Capital Region man is being held in the Greene County Jail, after multiple illegal drugs were located in his car following a traffic stop in Catskill.
Alonzo Lowe, 46, of Albany, was a passenger in the vehicle that was pulled over on Sunday morning, Steven Nevel, public information officer for state police Troop F said on Monday.
At about 5:44 a.m. state police observed a 2010 Nissan Rogue, being driven east on Route 23B in the village of Catskill, in violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
When troopers stopped the vehicle they learned that the driver, who was not identified by police, was in possession of only a New York State Learner’s Permit, and the passenger, Lowe, had a suspended New York State Driver’s License, Nevel said.
Police made the decision that the vehicle needed to be towed away. While troopers were taking an inventory search of the car, they located a plastic baggie containing 312 grams of crack-cocaine, 204 grams of cocaine, and 77 grams of an unknown powdery substance, Nevel said.
Lowe admitted to police that the illegal drugs belonged to him. He was also found to be in possession of 23.5 grams of additional crack-cocaine that was found in his pants, Nevel said.
The driver of the vehicle was released with traffic citations. Lowe was brought to the State Police barracks in Catskill where was charged with: first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, both class A felonies, criminal possession of a controlled substance, a narcotic drug, and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, with intent to sell, all class B felonies, Nevel said.
Lowe was arraigned in Town of Catskill Court before Judge William Jacobs and was remanded to the Greene County Jail, and held without bail, due to previous felony convictions, Nevel said.
Police did not say what charges Lowe was previously convicted of.
According to New York Penal Law, a person may be charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance when he or she knowingly and unlawfully possesses one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures or substances containing a narcotic drug and said preparations, compounds, mixtures or substances are of an aggregate weight of eight ounces or more.
If convicted of this charge in a court of law, the sentence may range from 20 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
The sentence for a conviction of second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance ranges from 8 years to life in prison, and a fine of up to $50,000.
The penalty for being found guilty of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance ranges from 5-25 years in prison, and a fine of up to $30,000.
