GREENPORT — Three people were taken to Columbia Memorial Health with non-life-threatening injuries Monday after a two-car accident in Greenport, Fire Chief John Onufrychuk Jr. said Tuesday.

William Alywald, 72, of Craryville, who was one of the drivers, and two unidentified passengers from the second vehicle, were taken to Columbia Memorial by Greenport Rescue Squad, Lt. John Rivero of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said. The second driver was Choudmya Vox, 16, of Hudson, Rivero said.

The accident occurred at about 12:05 p.m. on Fairview Avenue at Delaware Avenue, when the two vehicles collided in the intersection, with both cars coming to rest in the middle of the road, Onufrychuk said.

Greenport Fire Department and Greenport Rescue Squad were sent to the scene.

Alywald was trapped in the vehicle and was extricated by paramedics. The unidentified occupants of the second car were out of the vehicle before firefighters arrived, Onufrychuk said.

Fairview Avenue was closed between Delaware Avenue and Livingston Parkway while crews worked. Fire police directed traffic over residential streets.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office investigated. They were assisted at the scene by Greenport police and state police.

The road was reopened and all firefighters were back in service at 12:46 p.m.
