CANAAN — A high-speed pursuit that began in Schodack ended in Columbia County on Wednesday afternoon after spike strips were deployed, said Kerra M. Burns, public information officer for State Police Troop G on Thursday.
Troopers deployed the spike strips in the eastbound lanes of the Berkshire Spur at mile marker 17.3 in Canaan, said Tara L. McCormick, public information officer for state police Troop T.
The occupants of the car were arrested on multiple charges, according to state police.
William L. Tisdol, 46, of Troy, and Taraya S. Tisdol, 27, of Hartford, Connecticut, were charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony; fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class E felony; second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of unlawful possession of an ammunition feeding device, all misdemeanors, Burns said.
William Tisdol was also charged with third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, obstructing governmental administration, second-degree reckless endangerment and fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, all misdemeanors, Burns said.
The pursuit began on Interstate 90 in the town of Schodack in Rensselaer County. The car driven east by William Tisdol entered the Thruway at Exit B-1, Burns said.
Police stopped the vehicle at about 1:15 p.m. When speaking to Tisdol, the trooper observed signs of drug use, Burns said. The trooper searched both occupants and then began searching the vehicle.
A brief struggle with William Tisdol occurred when he grabbed the trooper, Burns said. Both occupants then fled the scene.
The pursuit took place on the Berkshire Spur, several times in both directions, as Tisdol kept turning around in an effort to elude police, Burns said.
An unidentified truck driver helped end the pursuit by slowing down Tisdol’s car, Burns said.
The chase ended just east of the B-2 exit, Burns said. Nobody was injured during the pursuit.
Once the car was stopped, troopers were able to complete the search. They found two loaded handguns, one of which was stolen from Connecticut. Troopers also found more than 2 ounces of marijuana, a digital scale, concentrated cannabis and edible marijuana, Burns said. William Tisdol and Taraya Tisdol were arraigned in Schodack Town Court. William Tisdol was taken to the Rensselaer County Jail, where he is being held without bail. Taraya Tisdol was taken to the Rensselaer County Jail and was held on $7,500 bail, Burns said.
