HUDSON — A Hudson man was killed Wednesday afternoon after his motorcycle crashed on North Second Street in the city, Hudson Police Chief L. Edward Moore said Thursday.

Jemol J. Lewis, 23, was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center, Moore said.

At about 5:59 p.m., Columbia County 911 sent Hudson Fire Department and Greenport Rescue Squad to 128 N. 2nd Street, after receiving reports of the crash, and that the driver was unconscious.

Hudson Police arrived first on the scene and found the victim lying face down, just off the roadway. Hudson firefighters arrived and began administering CPR, until Greenport Rescue members were able to take over, Moore said.

A Life Net helicopter was requested to the scene.

Rescue personnel continued performing life-saving measures for close to 45 minutes until the helicopter arrived.

Lewis was flown to Albany Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

The motorcycle went over the embankment before crashing. Police on the scene were also examining a guardrail in the area.

Hudson fire police closed the area to traffic.

No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the accident, Moore said.

“It appears at this time, the accident was due to driver error,” Moore said.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Department accident reconstruction team responded and assisted Hudson police detectives with the investigation.

“Greenport Rescue made a remarkable effort to sustain and save this young man’s life,” Moore said. “They are unsung heroes and are often overlooked.”

All firefighters were back in service at 7:09 p.m.

Wednesday’s fatal accident was the second in the past year in Hudson that involved a motorcycle.

On Oct. 14, 2020, a Copake man died after his motorcycle collided with a car on Prospect Avenue at the entrance to Columbia Memorial Health. The motorcycle was engulfed in flames after the crash.

The man died in the emergency room of the hospital.
