CLAVERACK — A 98-year-old woman was injured on Thursday morning in a one-car accident in Claverack, Aaron Hicks public information officer for state police Troop K, said Friday.

Alice Hallenbeck, 98, of Claverack was taken to Columbia Memorial Health with minor injuries, Hicks said.

At about 9:12 a.m., a 2005 Ford Focus driven by Hallenbeck west on Route 23B, in the area of Old Lane, left the road and struck a utility pole, snapping it in half, Hicks said.

Hallenbeck told police that she swerved to avoid a pedestrian, Hicks said.

Columbia County 911 sent Claverack Fire Company and Greenport Rescue Squad to the scene at 544 Route 23B. Greenport Fire Department was requested under mutual aid.

Arriving first responders worked to remove the woman from the car. She was placed on a stretcher and brought to Columbia Memorial.

Route 23B was closed to traffic while crews worked.

National Grid responded to replace the pole.

A Life Net helicopter was placed on standby, but was not needed.

The car was towed from the scene.

State police investigated.

All firefighters were back in service at 10:53 a.m.
