Firefighters were kept busy Thursday afternoon with two incidents that took place at nearly the same time.

At about 2:35 p.m., The Valatie Task Force was sent by Columbia County 911 to 3056 Upper Main St., in Valatie, after a caller reported that an electric outlet was burning.

Kinderhook and Niverville fire companies responded with Valatie to the scene.

Quick action by firefighters contained the fire to the outlet before it could spread to the wall, Valatie Fire Chief Joe Loeffler said Friday.

Fire officials requested that the village building inspector come to the home.

Valatie Rescue Squad assisted at the scene.

While firefighters were at the Valatie address, a second call came in for a home in Niverville.

At about 2:50 p.m., Columbia County 911 sent five fire companies to 117 Hunter Drive after the homeowner reported that smoke was filling the basement.

Assisting Niverville were Valatie, Kinderhook and Chatham. Claverack Fire Department stood by at their firehouse.

Arriving firefighters investigated and determined the smoke was coming from a malfunctioning furnace, fire officials said.

Valatie Rescue Squad was also on the scene.

All firefighters were back in service at 3:14 p.m.
